Can Thinking Manage Stress?

Dec 28th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

We would all like to see our stress just disappear like magic, but those of us who are practical realize that isn’t going to happen anytime soon. There are many stress management techniques individuals can use to help protect themselves from the effects of stress on the body, mind and emotions. Have you ever thought about whether or not how or what you are thinking can manage stress?

You have probably realized that how you react to a situation can create additional stress or dissipate it but have you imagined that your patterns of thinking may be able to have an impact on how you manage stress? Some people are overly critical of themselves and perhaps others and they have a negative way of thinking about things, about people and about themselves.

Negative thinking can and does influence the intensity of stress and the amount of unhappiness that we associate with the stress in our lives. Negative thoughts about what is happening to us can have a damaging effect on our self-confidence and our self-image. Negative thinking can also distract us from finding real solutions to the problems that stress us out.

Fibromyalgia – What Is It? Is It Real?

Dec 16th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Featured Articles, Nervous System, Pain Management

fibromyalgiaFibromyalgia is a chronic medical condition that was once thought to be purely psychological in nature. Today physicians know that has a basis in the physical that is exacerbated by psychological stress. It is characterized by wide spread pain in the ligaments and tendons. Fibromyalgia also causes fatigue and multiple tender points. These are places on the body where even a slight amount of pressure will cause pain.

There are 18 different sites used for fibromyalgia diagnosis which are considered tender points. These sites cluster around the neck, shoulder, chest, hip, knee and elbow regions. During an examination the physician applies as much pressure as what would be required to cause a finger nail bed to blanch, or start to become white. Others have found over 75 different tender points but these are not used for diagnostic purposes. They do however cause individuals pain and discomfort.

How to Help Your Child With CFS

Oct 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Child Health

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can affect anyone at any time. It usually occurs in adulthood but children are not immune. If your child has been diagnosed with this disease, there are ways that you can help.

The cause of CFS is unknown. Researchers have speculated that it could be the result of a viral or bacterial infection or other illness but there is as yet no proof. For now, doctors are dealing with the symptoms.

Children have also been affected by chronic fatigue syndrome. Because of the developmental stages of children and their unpredictability, it takes a watchful parent to notice that something is wrong. The symptoms of the disease include:

* Pain in the joints
* Tiredness that persists for more than 24 hours
* Headaches
* Problems concentrating
* Sore throat
* Lymph node tenderness in armpits and neck
* Chills
* Diarrhea
* Appetite and weight changes
* Mild fever

Results of Stress

Aug 27th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Mind & Spirit

Stress reeks havoc on our health systems. From the immune system to blood sugar and the cardiovascular system. In fact, the effects of stress are so pervasive that researchers and doctors are still not able to definitively produce an exhaustive list of everything that could go wrong in the human body. This means that stress can produce results that doctors still don’t know about.

Stress can be defined as those aggravating things that go wrong during the day or those irritating things that go bump in the night. Anything that interrupts your daily routine or nightly sleep can have a cumulative effects on the body and brain. Researchers have found that a chronic overreaction to Strauss will overload the brain with hormones intended for only short term used in emergency situations. This cumulative of fact will damage and killed brain cells in the long run.

Preventing Stress Setback in Your Management Plan

Aug 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

Stress is a part of life and you have learned how to plan for what stressors are likely to hit right? Well, you are doing well to have a stress management plan, but setback can and do happen in life and you must be prepared for them to happen.

You can set up strategies to handle setback by simplifying your life, managing time, being organized, being prepared for anything, exercise on a daily basis, eat nutritious meals, adjust your attitude to one of being positive in thought and action, and take frequent breaks even if they are short. You can also relax using relaxation techniques even while you are working by doing deep breathing. Learn to use humor to your advantage and let go of all unnecessary tasks.

Setbacks are just as inevitable as stress is in life so don’t sweat the small stuff and learn to take life as it comes. This is not always easy to do but it must be done or stress will creep back into your life in ways that will make you unhappy.

How Do You Manage Your Daily Stress?

Aug 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

Stress can be thrown at us at an early age; in fact an unborn baby can experience stress in utero. We either learn to cope with stress or learn how to avoid stress at an early age. We all have the ability to learn how to manage stress. Some of us learn by trial and error (the school of old knocks). Others make efforts to take classes in stress management or read books on the subject. We can also learn to manage stress by watching others deal with situations and events that cause stress or we can learn stress management techniques from a mental health professional.

We learn from experience or are taught that we can improve our ability to handle stress by first improving our diet, by exercising on a regular basis and by learning how to relax. It is also important to get enough quality sleep at night and to take time for relaxation instead of working all day and night. For most of us, humor can help us to relieve times of tension and to help cope with stressful situations.

What Is Extreme Stress and How Do You Manage It?

Aug 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

What is Extreme Stress and How Do You Manage It?

Many individuals experience what can be termed as, “extreme stress”. Situations that can create extreme stress include family responsibilities (single parent, caring for a disabled family member etc.,), work obligations, responsibilities to spouse, significant other, children as well as health concerns, financial concerns, local and global crime, and the loss through death, or moving of a family member or close friend.

There are also certain categories of individuals more prone to extreme stress such as health care workers, firemen, police officers, those living on the east or west coasts, low-income individuals, those of middle age, those who remain single throughout their life, and women and others who are considered of a minority in most populations.

Extreme stress is when a situation or event personally effects someone we care deeply about or when these things happen to us. The stress can be crushing, crippling and difficult to live with. Examples of situations where extreme stress exists would be catastrophic crises such as those from weather or war in which large populations are wiped out. Extreme stress affects the individual’s ability to survive or the ability of a loved one to survive.

Stress Management and the Change Factor

Aug 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

Life is full of changes and it is understandable that how we manage stress may be influenced by how we process change.

Change can be stressful or it can be a good thing. We all learn stress management techniques either through watching how others handle stress or by learning through educational resources such as taking a stress management class. We may have learned techniques such as doing yoga or other relaxation techniques in order to handle stress. We may have learned how to take time to enjoy life more, or how having a hobby can help us to manage stress. Just when we think we have stress management all figured out our life changes in some way and what we may have been doing before all of a sudden doesn’t work for us. It is at these times when change can totally mess us up.

Change can throw us off balance and make us re-evaluate what we are doing, and how we are managing our lives including how we manage stress. Since life changes are an inevitable part of life, dealing with change needs to also be a part of our stress management abilities.

Stress Management It Is a Matter of Planning

Aug 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Stress, Relaxation

Have you ever heard the saying, “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail”? This is a very applicable saying to most business and personal matters including stress management. If you fail to plan on your stress management strategy, you plan to fail managing stress.

We all know how important it is to manage the stress in our lives. Stress crops up in just about every aspect of life nowadays. Long-term stress can cause physical and emotional damage that can really impact your life. It can even lead to disease and death.

In order to have a stress management plan you need to know that there are two basic ways to handle stress. You either change the source of stress or you change the reaction you have to the stress.

While designing your stress management techniques remember to clearly identify the stressors. Assign an action to each stressor. An example would be if a stressor for you is the morning rush hour drive to work every weekday morning an action to address that stressor might be to leave fifteen minutes early in order to avoid the usual traffic bottleneck.
