Can You Get Fatter Without Gaining Weight

Jan 26th, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Diet & Weight Loss

In man’s eternal quest for a better body and more attention many of us believe that we can lose weight and get thinner. The reality is that weight loss and the perception of thin or fat is not the same as gaining fat or becoming thin. Let’s start by defining a few of these terms.

In the first place, fat and muscle are two completely different tissues in the body. Individuals who are losing way should have a goal of losing fat tissue and not muscle tissue. Unfortunately, some of the diets on the market today do not make this distinction and are only interested in assisting an individual to bring the numerical value on their bathroom scale spiraling downward.

So, if fat and muscle are different and is losing weight should mean losing fat, what happens to the muscle?

Exercise and Weight Loss

Jan 8th, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Diet & Weight Loss

Weight loss is really a simple formula. Calories eaten minus calories burned equals weight gain or weight loss. In other words, if you eat more than you burn then you’ll gain weight. And the opposite is also true – if you eat less than you burn then you lose weight.

When individuals are looking for true weight loss – that which stays off the body for weeks, months and years – they are also making permanent changes in the way in which they eat and exercise. Because, let’s face it, the more we exercise the more calories we burn and the greater weight we lose. OR the more food we can eat without gaining weight.

Exercise plays a vital role in the entire process of both losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

For instance, did you know that exercise is one of the single easiest thing that you can do daily that will help to improve your health? By doing some simple exercises, such as walking for 30 minutes, you can reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke.

What Causes Back Pain?

Jan 6th, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Joints, Bones & Muscles

Back pain is a common problem affecting literally millions of people. It can range from minor, temporary pain, to sustained pain in different parts of the back, neck or shoulders or involve the pinching of nerves, affecting the legs or arms.   The causes of back pain vary and can often be a combination of factors. Some of the factors identified by practitioners are set out below.

Sprains and strains An out-of-condition back or one with pre-existing problems is more vulnerable to soft tissue injuries like sprains and strains. A sprain isa joint injury that involves stretching or tearing of the ligaments. A strainisan injury to muscle or tendons. Stretching a ligament or muscle too quickly can result in a tear. Excessive force and certain repetitive use may also damage muscles.

Disc problems The intervertebral discs are the cushions between our vertebrae. These discs dry out and harden with age, making them susceptible to injury. Common disc complaints involve the disc bulging (prolapse), herniating or even rupturing.

Learning About Trace Minerals

Jan 1st, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Featured Articles, Nutrition

trace mineralsDid you know there are 92 elements found in nature and an additional 22 which are observed elements or scientists believe exists but have not been able to prove.

In addition to all of those there are also hundreds of isotopes of those elements, any one of which can play an important role in human health which has yet to of been discovered.

In these numerous elements are trace minerals which are called this because they are required in such a very small amounts.

And, while scientists and doctors believe they have identified many of the trace minerals required by the body for optimal health, they are required in such minute amounts and there are so many different trace elements that may be necessary, it is highly unlikely that physicians and scientists have identified all of them.

The Mineral Magnesium

Dec 30th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Nutrition

Magnesium is a magnificent mineral. It is the fourth most abundant mineral in the body and essential to good health for each and every one of us. Interestingly, approximately 50% of the magnesium stored in our body can be found in the bone. The other half is found inside of the cells of our body tissue and organs and only 1% is found in the blood. But, although the amount found in the blood is so small, the body works very hard to keep this number constant.

Magnesium is a mineral found in all unprocessed foods. There is a high concentration in unmilled grain, dark leafy vegetables, fruit, nuts and legumes. Although there is an abundance in whole foods, because of the standard Western diet and potential malabsorption issues many people can create a situation where they don’t receive enough magnesium to support optimal health.

Exercise During Menopause

Dec 28th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Fitness & Exercise, Women's Health

One of the hallmark signs of perimenopause and menopause is a significant 10 to 15 pound weight gain that appears to come overnight. Many women are told that this is a common “middle aged spread” and that they must learn to live with it. In fact, while it may be associated with perimenopause and menopause, there are also other significant environmental and hormonal changes which can be affected and results in less weight gain or reversal.

Some of the reasons that women gain weight during perimenopause and menopause are a lack of exercise, eating more food, stress-related eating, hormonal imbalances, thyroid dysfunction and other underlying medical condition that become more evidence when the masking effect of estrogen is dropped.

Before assuming that the sudden weight gain is normal a woman should see her primary care physician or gynecologist in order to rule out any other medical condition that may be causing this effect. While there, she should also check with her physician to be sure that she can include both cardiac and strength training exercises in her weekly regimen. The physician can help evaluate how much exercise will be appropriate and the woman will be able to withstand, considering any other medical issues or conditions which she may be facing.

Metabolism Changes With Age

Dec 22nd, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness & Exercise

Do you need another reason to look forward to the aging process? Well you won’t have to look too far!

Metabolism is the rate at which the body burns calories and uses energy. There are a variety of different calculators available online which will help you to determine your basal metabolic rate (explained below) and the factors which contribute to the speed of your individual metabolism. These factors will determine how much food you can eat before you start gaining weight.

Your basal metabolic rate, or resting metabolic rate, is the number of calories you burn by simply living. In other words, if you were to wake up in the morning and lay in bed all day, rate it would take to maintain your body. Some of the factors that go into your basal metabolic rate are determined by genetics while other factors can be affected by your activity level in the foods that you eat.

How to Lose Weight

Dec 20th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Diet & Weight Loss

Losing weight over 40 presents different challenges than those you faced when you were 20. For one thing, life is often busier and you have less time to plan meals, get exercise and go shopping. And, for another thing, you now face the added challenge of a slowed metabolism.

Your metabolism is the speed or rate at which calories or burned in the body to do a specific task. For instance, the basal metabolic rate is the number of calories required in order for you to live each day, if you did nothing but lay in bed. Any additional exercise that you may get are just additional calories that you may eat in order to keep your body weight at the same way it is now.

Calories is the unit of measure for energy which expresses how much energy is expended in order to achieve the specific activity. For instance, there are exercise calculators which allow you to input a specific activity and determine how many calories are required for you to achieve it. The number of calories will be based on your age, height and weight-all of which are necessary factors to determine the number of calories burned during a specific activity.

Andropause

Dec 6th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Men's Health

Andropause is the result of low testosterone in the mail body. I that time then reads the ages of 40 to 55 they may experience a phenomenon that is similar to female menopause. Unlike women who can mark menopause through the cessation of their menstrual cycle, men do not have a clear-cut signpost. However, Andropause is distinguished by a marked drop in hormone levels. This drop can account for changes in attitude, mood, fatigue, loss of energy, loss of sex drive and physical agility.

Studies also show that this decline in testosterone in the mail can’t put them at greater risk for other health problems such as heart disease and osteoporosis. Since this all occurs at a time in life when many men began to question their values, accomplishments and possible direction in life, it can be difficult to differentiate between the changes that are physical and those that are emotional.

How to Eat Right During Menopause

Dec 2nd, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Women's Health

Transitioning into menopause means that you no longer have a period. Hormone levels also decrease because eggs are no longer released. To stay healthy, learning to eat right during menopause is important.

When you are in your reproductive years, you release an egg each month. If you don’t get pregnant, the egg is shed along with the lining of the uterus that was thickened for implantation. This is the period you experience each month with its cramps and body aches. Hormones dictate the release of the egg and the preparation of the uterus for a child.

Once you hit menopause, that hormone production decreases which leads to a number of symptoms and conditions that you need to be aware of. First, you may experience hot flashes, night sweats, and urinary problems. Internally, your bones are prone to osteoporosis and you are at greater risk for heart disease and brain disorders like Alzheimer’s. Women have a hard time getting their bone-building calcium and iron but it is more necessary now that estrogen is low.

Exercise Tips for Healthy Aging

Oct 22nd, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Fitness & Exercise

It is a fact that we will all get older. But, aging doesn’t have to be the specter looming on the horizon that many fear it is. Keep your body healthy through exercise.

Exercise, combined with diet, is one way to age gracefully. As we age, we lose muscle strength. It is a condition known as sarcopenia. Loss of muscle mass as well as strength can be a fatal combination in the aging population. Strength contributes to balance and flexibility. Without it, a fall can result in a broken hip or arm instead of a possible sprain from catching yourself.

There are no quick fixes to getting into shape. But, you can begin an exercise program at any age and reap the rewards. For seniors, implementing an exercise program may help to reverse the effects of time on your joints, muscles and bones. For women especially, osteoporosis is a threat as you age.

So, what types of exercises can you perform? Don’t worry – you won’t be doing any PT training any time soon. You can strive for that but not right away. When choosing your exercise, use these tips.

Does Vitamin K Help Prevent Osteoporosis

Oct 19th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Joints, Bones & Muscles

Vitamin K comes into different forms: K-1 and K2. Kay one is synthesized from plants which we and K2 is synthesized in animals, including humans, from bacteria in the intestines. K2 is found in higher concentrations than Kate one in certain organs of the body, including the liver which suggests that there is more to be discovered about the synthesis and use the vitamin K in the body.

For the past several years researchers and doctors have believes that vitamin K has had a distinct role in the manufacture of bone and prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis is a chronic bone condition that has a negative effect on the health of twice as many women as men over the age of 40. Bone loss occurs in everyone over the age of 35 and once a woman reaches menopause be preventative effects of estrogen are lost. Osteoporosis is a negative balance between bone growth and bone thinning.

Thyroid Nodules

Oct 9th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Thyroid Health

The thyroid gland, small in size, is a small gland that lies within the neck region. Formed within the thyroid gland lie lumps that are either solid or filled with fluid. These lumps are known as nodules. While most of the time these lumps are harmless and noncancerous, they can sometimes be malignant, or cancerous. This is not usually discovered, unless they enlarge, until your physician detects it during a routine physical examination.

The signs and symptoms of a thyroid nodule are difficult to detect. They only way that a person detects them on their own is if they are felt or swelling is seen in the neck area. If by chance they excrete an excessive amount of thyroxine a person may notice some weight loss, note a rapid heartbeat, or are unusually nervous. Signs and symptoms of a malignant thyroid nodule are rapid growth, noticeably enlarged lymph nodes, and/or hoarseness or dyspnea.
