Migraine

“Balanced, authoritative . . . brilliant.” –The London Times

“Written by one of the great clinical writers of the twentieth century, Migraine . . . should be read as much for its brilliant insights into the nature of our mental functioning as for its discussion of the migraine.” –The New York Times Book Review

I’ve Learned…

Dec 21st, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Healing Our World

I’ve learned that you cannot make someone love you. All you can do is be someone that can be loved. The rest is up to them.

I’ve learned that no matter how much I care, some people just don’t care back.

I’ve learned that it takes years to build up trust, and only seconds to destroy it.

I’ve learned that it’s not what you have in your life, but who you have in your life that counts.

I’ve learned that you shouldn’t compare yourself to the best others can do.

I’ve learned that you can do some thing in an instant that will give you heartache for life.

I’ve learned that it’s taking me a long time to become the person I want to be.

I’ve learned that you should always leave loved ones with loving words. It may be the last time you see them.

I’ve learned that you can keep going long after you can’t.

How Essential Oils Are Used For Emotional Well-Being

Oct 19th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy, Featured Articles

Aromatherapy for emotional well-beingEssential oils have been used for about one thousand years for all sorts of reasons. One of the key uses for essential oils has been for emotional healing. These preparations of plants are excellent at producing a feeling of well-being.

There are generally three methods for using these essential oils to promote emotional health. One is to add ten drops of the oil to a bath and soak. Another is to put a few drops on the essential oil in a carrier oil and use it for a massage.

The final method is to inhale the aroma of the oil directly. This can be done by putting a few drops of the essential oils on a handkerchief or tissue and holding it up to the nose. You can also accomplish the same thing by boiling two cups of water, adding the oil, and inhaling the vapors. Different essential oils are used for different emotional problems. For example, grief comes to most people at some time in their lives. It may involve a loss of a job, a home, a marriage, or an actual death. In any case, using essential oils of frankincense or rose can help to ease the suffering.

Law of Forgiveness

Oct 9th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Featured Articles, Mind & Spirit

It turns out that the Law of Attraction, made popular by the movie “The Secret” is only the beginning. According to many personal development gurus there are 7 essential laws of the Universe. Unfortunately, they can’t come to an agreement on which 7 are really the essential ones and which are supporting actors. But, it also turns out that it doesn’t really matter because they all work together, like cogs in a wheel, to make the world go round.

Many of these laws have a strong basis in New Age thought or different religious backgrounds. However, while different entities have accepted and even embrace some of these laws many of them are just reality, the same way that the law of gravity is just reality. For instance, when you get out of bed in the morning you expect your feet hit the floor. Your feet hit the floor because of gravity. You don’t expect to wake up in the morning floating up near the ceiling, but instead lining in your bed comfortably beneath your covers.

The Sense of Smell and Emotional Response

Sep 8th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Smell is a specialised chemical sense. It is interesting to note that the olfactory cells are the only place in the human body where the central nervous system is in direct contact with the external environment. When we detect the smell of something, there is a direct contact between the molecules of scent and our own receptors.

The message regarding the molecule of scent is passed along the olfactory nerve to the nerve centre in the brain. The neurons of the olfactory nerve, control the inner responses, i.e. emotions and memories, as well as the bodys hormones. There is no generally accepted classification of the basic types of smells recognized by man. The sense of smell can be very sensitive, sensing minute concentrations of some substances in the air.

There is considerable individual variation in the activity of the sense of smell. Adaption can occur to pleasant as well as nasty smells, due to changes in both the receptors and the central connections.

We all have our own fashion style, but did you realize your choice of colors may actually reveal more about you than just your tastes or that the colors you wear may even affect your moods?

It is now accepted that color can be used to stimulate or inhibit certain behaviors.

Advertising executives are well aware that a product can have a completely different impact if the color of the packaging is changed. Psychologists have found that certain colors in our immediate environment can help us perform some tasks. For example, exercise is best performed in an environment of warm colors, such as reds and oranges, whereas the tranquil blues and greens are ideal for mental Concentration.

Quite often the sayings in the English language have tapped into a deeper interpretation of the colors. Red with rage, green with jealousy, purple passion, feeling Blue, he is yellow, are well known to most people. However, each color has a cornucopia of meanings associated with it. If you would like to understand what some of the common colors mean see the chart.

History, Myths and Legends of Aromatherapy

Aug 31st, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

VARIOUS CIVILISATIONS throughout history have employed the use of aromatic plants for religious, medicinal, cosmetic and magickal purposes. One of the earliest forms of aromatherapy was the use of aromatic plants as Incense. The word perfume comes from the Latin word perfumum, which means through smoke. This would have originally referred to the use of Incense. Incense was burned as a way to get rid of evil spirits, which many of the ancients considered to be the cause of disease. Associations became made between the healing of disease and the aromas of the plants used in the healing treatments, and this became the early foundation for what we now know today as aromatherapy.

Understanding Single Parent Psychology and Mental Health

Aug 11th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Mental & Emotional Health

Extramarital pregnancy, divorce, and abandonment of one parent are some reasons why there are single parents. What most people dont know is, these occurrences are life-changing as they can be traumatic for the single parent and the child, making them often misunderstood. That makes the study of a single parents psychology and mental health important.

Studies have reported that there are more child and adolescent problems for households with single parents rather than those with the normal set-up. While most single parents may disagree, it is understandable why the statistics say so.

For one, a single parent has limited time in his hands. Managing a household with another person is difficult in itself. What more if you have to do it alone. Thats why it is important for a single parent to make a daily or weekly schedule of his activities. That way, he can find time to do all the things that need to be done, including some time off for leisure and relaxation.

How to Rebuild Your Relationship after Miscarriage: Five Tips for Men

Miscarriage is the death of a child before he or she is born. Everyone rallies around the mother in a time like this, but the father of the child is grieving too. As a man, use your feelings to rebuild your relationship and find healing for both of you.

Men often deal with loss in a different way than women. It is just the way of the world. Men are raised to be strong and show very little emotion while women are encouraged to cry on the nearest shoulder. When a miscarriage occurs, however, the old traditions of grief have to be suspended if you want your relationship to survive it.

Resist the urge to be resentful if the crowd gathers around your wife or girlfriend. We are conditioned to think that she is the only one grieving because she carried the baby. These tips will help you find an outlet for your feelings.
