Good Oils to Have in Your First Aid Kit

Dec 19th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Here is some info on a few herbal essential oils that are a very helpful addition to your familys First Aid kit

Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)

* Clary Sage is used in aromatherapy in preference to Sage (Salvia Officinalis) because Sage can be quite toxic. Clary possesses the positive effects of Sage without the danger. One should avoid the use of alcohol while using Clary Sage because the combination can bring on severe Nightmares. Clary produces a heightened state akin to euphoria and relaxation. It is used in treating Asthma, and during convalescence of the flu. It is used in abdominal massage for digestive problems. (Source: A-Z Aromatherapy by Patricia Davis)
* Most valuable uses: Muscular fatigue, menstrual problems, PMS, Fertility, exhaustion, Insomnia, Menopausal problems, calming, stress, depression, cramps, excessive Perspiration.
* Therapeutic properties: Antiseptic, calmative, tonic, emmenagogue, anti-infectious, anti-spasmodic, anti-sudorific, Aphrodisiac, Nerve Tonic, nervine, estrogen-like

The Causes of Baldness

Dec 18th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Beauty & Personal Care

Baldness is a condition that millions of men have to deal with in their lifetime. As they age, they begin to lose the hair on the top of their heads. But what actually causes baldness to occur?

In men, this condition of hair loss is referred to as male pattern baldness. Normally, we lose hundreds of hairs each day from our scalp. But, they grow back so we never even notice that they are gone. With age, the process slows down and many of those hairs do not return.

Depending on their genes, men can lose hair as early as their twenties. It usually begins in the front and receded backwards towards the nape of the neck. Some men do lose their hair from the center of their head outward. Many men end up with hair loss on the top and in the front.

There can be different reasons for this hair loss. It is best to check with a doctor first to confirm the actual cause before you decide on a course of treatment.

Eczema

Dec 15th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Allergies, Skin Ailments

The term eczema is applied very broadly to a group of persistant skin conditions that are characterized by dryness, recurring rashes, redness and, cracking, oozing and bleeding. Individuals who experience eczema may also have temporary skin discoloration which often disappear over time. They are a result of heeled lesions and scarring is very rare.

Interestingly, the prevalence of eczema will peak in infancy, meaning that the majority of individuals who are treated clinically start with their eczema when their infants. Girls are predominantly affected and also present during their reproductive years, between the ages of 15 and 49. Since The Second World War the number of individuals who are diagnosed with eczema has increased significantly. This is true both in the United States and in data collected in the UK.

There are at least four common types of eczema which have been reported- atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, xerotic eczema and seborrheic dermatitis. Much less commonly are diagnosed: Dyshidrosis, Discoid eczema, venous eczema, dermatitis herpetiformis, neurodermatitis, and autoeczematization.

Dermatitis and It’s Many Forms

Sep 9th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Featured Articles, Skin Ailments

Dermatitis shows up on the skin as an itchy and inflamed mess. There are many different types of dermatitis. Some forms of dermatitis are still not completely understood.

If you have a rash develop after coming into contact with substances that your skin disagrees with then you are probably dealing with contact dermatitis. Neurodermatitis is normally localized to a specific area of your body. Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition of the scalp and is one of the causes for dandruff. Stasis dermatitis appears on your legs and is caused by fluid that accumulates there. Atopic dermatitis (eczema) is a rash that chronically comes and goes. A bumpy rash that shows up around the mouth or nose is known as perioral dermatitis.

In order to discover what type of dermatitis you are dealing with the doctor will need to do a medical history check and take a close look at the symptoms you are dealing with. They might need to do a skin patch test or take a biopsy depending on what they see when they are looking over your skin.

The Amazing Benefits of Melaleuca (Tea Tree) Oil

Sep 7th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Melaleuca oil, also known as Tea Tree oil, is truly nature’s natural antiseptic. This topical oil, which comes from an Australian tree called the Tea Tree, is naturally safe oil that is effective as an antibiotic, anti-viral, and fungicide.

Tea Tree oil was first used by the Bundjalung Aborigines living in the Northeast Corner of what is now New South Wales, Australia. They would pick the oil-covered leaves of the Tea Tree and rub them on their skin to alleviate cuts, bites, burns, and other skin ailments. They made a dressing for wounds by grinding the leaves into a paste. They also crushed the leaves to use as an insect repellant.

There are several kinds of tea trees. Yet, the most potent medicinal oil is called Melaleuca alternifolia.

Balancing the 11 Chakras With Color

Sep 1st, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Color, Crystal Therapy

Color is used in many forms to heal and aid the sick, diseased and distressed. As a color therapist I use the following color to balance the 11 chakras of the physical and energy body of the person. I always start with the heart chakra, the center of the human form and the seat of the soul. Here are the colors I use to balance the 11 chakras:

Heart Chakra: Green (4th) Green is the color of harmony and balance. It is good for tired nerves and it helps with the heart area. It will balance the emotions and bring about a feeling of calmness. Green is a good general healing color because it stimulates growth so it is good for helping heal broken bones, regret of tissue of all kinds. Green is a good color for Pregnant women to help create an atmosphere of serenity and calm. Too much green may create more negative energy if there is some already present in the person being treated.

To ease congestion and fight infections use Tea-Tree, Pine, Eucalyptus and Lavender. Bergamot tea is useful for a Sore Throat and can be used as a gargle. Olive Oil – Not Just for Cooking

Aug 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Olive Oil is a rich non-drying oil suitable for use in various cosmetic applications. Olive Oil can be used in a range of skin preparations including massage and bath oils, Moisturizers, ointments and balms, Soaps, shampoos and herbal infusions.

Olive Oils chemical free nature makes it suitable for those who have allergic reactions to substances used in mass-produced Soaps. Olive Oil Soap produces a hard Soap that dries quickly, is mild and non-drying to the skin, has a rich creamy lather and lasts longer than most other vegetable, animal and mineral oil Soaps.

Despite their many benefits the cost of ingredients and production will keep Olive Oil-based cosmetics at the higher end of the market. Cheaper olive oils and blends can be used, however the trade-off for reduced price is a loss of quality.

Even if you do not eat it, Olive Oil is an amazing health remedy. According to researchers, putting extra virgin Olive Oil on your skin after sunbathing could protect you from ultraviolet radiation. It is not a sunscreen, but Vitamin E and other Antioxidants nab free radicals caused by the sun before they do too much harm. Just make sure you use extra virgin ‘ regular Olive Oil is not as effective.
