Echinacea

Mar 14th, 2010 | By Dee | Category: Herbs for Health

Echinacea is an herb that is extremely effective and holds multiple purposes. There are nine different species of Echinacea but the one most commonly used and referred to is the Echinacea purpurea. Many people take Echinacea everyday to prevent colds, flu, and any other types of infections that might be running rapid at the time as Echinacea has been known for strengthening the immune system. Some people also use Echinacea for the treatment of acne and boils. The entire Echinacea plant including the roots are dried and made into teas, juices, and tonics.

While many swear by the power and strength of Echinacea there is no scientific backing that gives these claims any validity whatsoever. The Natives used to use Echinacea for many different things including the treatment of poisonous snake bites and insect bites. Back in the 1800’s Echinacea played a very large part of United States medicine and then spread to Germany where they too used it for many medical purposes.

A Homeopathic Approach to Dealing With UTI

Oct 10th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Alternative Therapies, Featured Articles, Urinary Health

Homeopathic Approach to Dealing With UTIA Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enters the bladder. It makes it’s way there through the urethra and there is a chance that it will multiply once it gets to the bladder. UTI’s are also known as cystitis or a bladder infection.

A UTI can be extremely uncomfortable but they are easy to treat. The most common cause of a bladder infection is the E. Coli bacterium.

Bladder infection’s usually fall under two categories. Either your lower tract or upper tract can become infected. A lower tract infection takes place in the urethra and sometimes the bladder. The second type of infection, upper tract, is more serious. An upper tract infection involves bacteria attacking the kidneys. The bacteria comes from the blood or travels up through the bladder to the kidneys. Another name for a kidney infection is pyelonephritis.

There are many symptoms that will alert you that a UTI is present: A need to urinate with no warning, urinating more often than normal, pain during urination, abnormal looking or smelling urine, lower back pain, pain in the abdominal area or a fever.

Cystitis: An Explanation

Sep 18th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Urinary Health

Cystitis refers to an inflammation of the bladder. It is quite painful for anyone who has experienced it. Cystitis can be caused by a bacteria or a chronic condition.

Cystitis occurs in the bladder. When it is caused by bacteria, it is referred to more commonly as a urinary tract infection. The bacteria are usually introduced into the body through the urethra, the opening from the bladder to the outside of the body. In women, there is such a short distance between the bladder and the outside that it is easy for an infection to begin and then migrate there.

Cystitis can also be caused by products used on your body that cause a reaction and irritation. This could be perfume soaps, birth control methods like spermicidal jellies, side effects of radiation therapy or using a bladder catheter for an extensive period of time.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection?

Sep 9th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Urinary Health

A urinary tract infection is any type of infection that occurs within the urinary system. The condition is more common amongst women. An untreated infection can spread to the kidneys and cause serious damage.

Why are women more susceptible? It has to do with anatomy. Within the female urinary system, there are the kidneys, ureters, bladder and the urethra. For women, the urethra is shorter than in men. This means that if bacteria are introduced into the urethra, it has a greater chance of moving up the urinary tract and creating an infection. A common cause is wiping back to front after using the bathroom.

When a urinary tract infection is present, you may be aware of certain symptoms. First, there will be a burning sensation when you urinate. Even if you don’t have to go, there is a strong feeling that you need to urinate. Bacteria can also cause urine to smell foul and look cloudy. It is not uncommon to see blood in the urine as well.

Aug 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Fall, like Spring, is a time of extreme change for many living in non-temperate areas. The air becomes drier or in some circumstances wetter and cooler. These and other changes can foster the dreaded cold or flu, which would normally be fought off by your body. Emotional stress tends to be stronger in the Fall as we tend more torward reflection. To assist in staying healthy, there are a number of things you can do using essential oils in your environments.

The air becomes drier in the Fall. The membranes in your nose can become dry and non-effective. This lack of proper filtering of air can result in germs and bacterial agents gaining access into your body and causing problems. Thus, creating a moist environment in your home or work space is vital. Many people today use a central ventilation system which includes humidification. Since mold, bacteria and other foreign Toxins can rapidly grow in stagnant water, be sure to have your system properly serviced and ask if it is suitable to add essential oils to the water being used.

Many Uses of Tea Tree Oil

Aug 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Tea Tree, or Melaleuca alternifolia is just one of those wonder oils! This, along with lavendar are the only Essential Oils which can be used neat on the skin, however with all things, some people may be sensitive to this. Its right up there as an anti fungal/bacterial/septic, fights any bugs, and also helps to strengthen the Immune System.

I like to make room-sprays for different parts of the house – we gotta do something with all those spray-bottles now, dont we. Simply (with any oil) dissolve a bit in some oil dispersant (I use a small amount of methylated spirits as its cheap!!), top up the bottle with water, and spray, spray, spray. If possible, glass is best, but be aware that Essential Oils can eat into plastic, so the sprayers sometimes give-up.

Cholecystitis and Back Pain

Aug 28th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Pain Management

Cholecystitis is an acute and/or chronic disorder that emerges from inflammation. Inflammation stretches to the gallbladder. The common conditions are linked to cholelithiasis, or the start of gallstones. You may wonder how back pain starts from this disorder, yet if you continue reading, you can see how it affects the spine. Gallbladder infections can cause lower back pains, specifically sharp pain, since it is a membranous sac located in the muscles. The sac stores in bile in the liver.

Cholelithiasis may derive from bile pigments, obesity, cholesterol, estrogen therapy, calcium stones, and infections of the gallbladder. The disease can cause chest pain, indigestion, and so on. Cholelithiasis also causes episodic pain from colicky symptoms, which expend to the epigastric, which lies up or over the abdomen and radiates to the shoulders and back. The worst condition puts the patient at risk of jaundice. If the condition continues, the patient will feel repeated spurts of nausea, which causes vomiting.

Back Pain and Hypercortisolism

Aug 23rd, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Pain Management

Hypercortisolism is a long medical term that defines Cushings syndrome. Cushings syndrome is a hyperactive disorder that affects the adrenal cortex and results in excessive secretion of cortisol, which is passed from Glucocorticoids. Cushings syndrome can increase sex hormones and mineralocorticoids.

The pituitary glands are stimulated by hypothalamic. The pituitary glands are also affected by carcinoma and/or adenoma.

As well, the adrenal glands are affected by hyperplasia when Cushings syndrome is present. When Cushings syndrome is present, exogenous secretes into the ACTH via the neoplasm, which is malignant. It continues onto the gallbladder and lungs. You will need to read the anatomy of the skeleton system to see how it affects the spinal column, which in turn causes back pain.

The disorder prolongs or submits excessive administration of ACTH and/or Glucocorticoids into the system, which transmits to the cortex. Since ACTH is secreted excessively into the system, it causes joint pain, edema, fragile skin, weight gain, hypertension, ecchymosis, fatigue, weakness, hirsutism, mood swings, and so on. The symptoms carry onto create acne, abdomen striae, slow healing, moon face, muscle waste, recurrent infections, buffalo humps, gynecomastia, truncal obesity, and so on. We see that obesity, joint pain, weight gain, edema, and other elements of the disorder causes back pain as well.
