Creighton University Medical Center School of Medicine is out to determine if alternative therapies actually work. Aromatherapy has long been recognized for the treatment of minor ailments as well as the promotion of emotional stability. But how does it actually work? The Medical Center reports that while there is widespread use, there is still not much scientific evidence to support claims of the ability to treat these ailments.
What studies have been done? The school has tested the lavender, chamomile, marigold and peppermint essential oils in several studies to see if there was a reduction in the perception of pain. Placebo tests were also performed in these studies as well. The results showed that there positive effects through the use of the essential oils although they were not conclusive. Does that mean that essential oils do not work? Absolutely not! What the studies do show is that there are positive physiological effects when aromatherapy was used as a complementary form of treatment. Read more...

Essential oils are great to use around your home, but before you run out to your local health food store to buy a bunch of these bottles, you need to know a little more about how to use them. When you purchase any essential oil, you will first notice that you are buying a very little bottle. You might wonder how you could possibly make good use of such a small amount of oil. That is where carrier oils come into play.
Carrier oils are very important to people who use any type of essential oils. Almost all essential oils are too concentrated and powerful to be used alone. If you do put straight and undiluted essential oil on your skin, you will probably notice an immediate reaction. It could be a very mild tingling of the skin, or it could burn. Carrier oils are used to extend the use of your essential oils and to make them suitable to use on your skin. Here is a closer look at some of the more popular types of carrier oils that you can purchase. Read more...

A lot of scientific research is being done on aromatherapy and the effects it has on our body, mind and emotions. However, hard research supporting the healing power is limited. I often see the effect that different smells have on people. It is very interesting to watch someone inhale a fragrance deeply and say Oh, that smells so good!?And then two minutes later another person inhales the same fragrance and their response is Oh, that stinks!?as they remove the scent quickly away from their nose.
However, it is not simply the aroma that is important, but also the chemical interaction between the essential oils and the body and the physical changes brought about. Each essential oil has its own individual combination of constituents which interact with your bodys chemistry and produces specific therapeutic effects.

When choosing essential oils and other aromatherapy products, you know that you will have to seek out good quality items. A poorly made essential oil will not give you the results you are looking for. Besides looking for top quality oils, another item you will want to carefully consider are the carrier oils that you will use.
Carrier oils are very important to you and your essential oils. Carrier oils will help dilute your essential oils and make them usable for your body. You must remember that undiluted essential oils are very strong and they can burn and irritate your skin if not diluted. Carrier oils will also help your essential oils last longer and this is a good thing. When you purchase bottles of essential oils, you will notice that you will only get a very small amount. Usually only two or three drops is all you need to use for each use. Read more...

(A few simple steps on how to go about making Your Own Perfume)
Chapter 1 Introduction
Why is it that women love perfume as much as men love cars? There are some researchers who believe that a womans reason for loving perfume is because of the pheromones their bodies produce. Often, certain scents or perfumes trigger the increase of how much pheromone a womans body will produce.
While a perfume will help in increasing the production of a womans pheromone levels, they are also liked by women because of the attention they get from a member of the opposite sex or even from another woman.
In studies carried out, nearly 80% of all women will make a perfume purchase at least once each year.
Many women will tell you that the reason they purchase a particular perfume for themselves is that it makes them smell great and they seem to feel better about themselves. It also makes them feel a little bit more feminine. Not only does smelling great make a woman feel good about herself, but it will make her feel attractive also. Read more...

Bath and massage oils are made by adding Essential Oils to vegetable Carrier Oil bases. The ratio is one teaspoon of Essential Oil to 4 ounces of Carrier Oil. Use amber or cobalt Blue glass for your oils and keep out of direct light. Do not store in plastic bottles. It is best not to store in the bathroom because of the heat during showers.
Bath Oils
Using Essential Oils in the bath is one of the nicest ways to enjoy their therapeutic benefits. Adding them to a Carrier Oil help to disperse the Essential Oils throughout the water and onto to your body. Lighter oils disperse more readily in the water. To use bath oils, draw your bath first, close the door and then add about two teaspoons of bath oil to your water.
Heavier oils lie on the top of the bath water and will cling to your skin when leaving the bath.
Light oils suitable for bath oils that readily disperse include Sunflower oil and Grapeseed oil. Read more...

Carrier Oils may be applied directly on the skin, and/or Essential Oils may be added for use as body, bath or massage oils. As most holistic aroma therapy treatments involve massage, it is important that Carrier Oils are pure, unadulterated and naturally extracted.
Vegetable oils are the most familiar Carrier Oils used in aromatherapy as they have many interesting properties & benefits. Store away from heat & strong light sources. (May be refrigerated to extend shelf life). External use only.
