Essential Oils in the Bath

Sep 2nd, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

There are several ways to use essential oils in the bath. First, of course, they can just be added neat and undiluted to the water. This gives the bath a wonderful aroma and you the therapeutic values of whichever oils you have chosen. But the oils can also be incorporated into homemade bath crystals, bath oils and bubble baths.

Most of the prettily packaged bath crystals you can buy in the shops are nothing more than washing soda crystals with color and fragrance added. To make your own at home couldn’t be easier and if you save attractive glass jars over the year. Simply crush washing soda crystals, add a little food coloring, and the essential oils of your choice – to each 250 grams add 20 drops of essential oil. Tie a few ribbons around the jars, et voila . . .

Olive Oil – Not Just for Cooking

Aug 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Olive Oil is a rich non-drying oil suitable for use in various cosmetic applications. Olive Oil can be used in a range of skin preparations including massage and bath oils, Moisturizers, ointments and balms, Soaps, shampoos and herbal infusions.

Olive Oils chemical free nature makes it suitable for those who have allergic reactions to substances used in mass-produced Soaps. Olive Oil Soap produces a hard Soap that dries quickly, is mild and non-drying to the skin, has a rich creamy lather and lasts longer than most other vegetable, animal and mineral oil Soaps.

Despite their many benefits the cost of ingredients and production will keep Olive Oil-based cosmetics at the higher end of the market. Cheaper olive oils and blends can be used, however the trade-off for reduced price is a loss of quality.

Even if you do not eat it, Olive Oil is an amazing health remedy. According to researchers, putting extra virgin Olive Oil on your skin after sunbathing could protect you from ultraviolet radiation. It is not a sunscreen, but Vitamin E and other Antioxidants nab free radicals caused by the sun before they do too much harm. Just make sure you use extra virgin ‘ regular Olive Oil is not as effective.

Making Bath and Massage Oils

Aug 29th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Aromatherapy

Bath and massage oils are made by adding Essential Oils to vegetable Carrier Oil bases. The ratio is one teaspoon of Essential Oil to 4 ounces of Carrier Oil. Use amber or cobalt Blue glass for your oils and keep out of direct light. Do not store in plastic bottles. It is best not to store in the bathroom because of the heat during showers.

Bath Oils

Using Essential Oils in the bath is one of the nicest ways to enjoy their therapeutic benefits. Adding them to a Carrier Oil help to disperse the Essential Oils throughout the water and onto to your body. Lighter oils disperse more readily in the water. To use bath oils, draw your bath first, close the door and then add about two teaspoons of bath oil to your water.

Heavier oils lie on the top of the bath water and will cling to your skin when leaving the bath.

Light oils suitable for bath oils that readily disperse include Sunflower oil and Grapeseed oil.

How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

Aug 9th, 2009 | By Dee | Category: Insomnia, Sleep Disorders

A good night’s sleep is more important than you may realise. Those seven to nine hours of rest time affects your entire body for the coming day. If you have trouble getting to sleep or staying asleep, here are ten ideas to turn your rocky night into smooth sailing.

1. Adjust the temperature in your room. You may not have a separate control but the entire household can benefit from a cooler temperature for snoozing. High humidity makes it harder to fall asleep comfortably.

2. Resist the urge to do any work or watch television in bed. When you perform other tasks in the bedroom, your brain doesn’t associate your bed with sleep only. When you turn on the television, the mind revs up instead of slowing down for rest.

3. Play soothing music. Slow, instrumental tunes lull the body and the mind to sleep. It can be a nightly signal that sleep is coming and the body will begin to relax.

Ingredients:

  • Turkey Red Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Fragrance as desired
  • Polysorbate 80
  • Mica for Turkey Red Oil if desired
  • Mica for Olive Oil if desired
  • Glitter if desired

Directions

I don’t really have a Recipe as much as it’s a technique. I only make it as I need it….;) I make these in a 4 oz Bottle. For Red and Yellow….No Mica is needed…turkey red oil gives a Nice red color on the bottom…and Olive gives a nice Yellow color on TOP……POLY 80 is ONLY needed in the OLIVE OIL. :) I start with Turkey Red Oil–it is heavier and sinks to the bottom, so this will be your bottom color. I mix more than I need for the 4 oz bottle…..and pour some in the Tub with my tester ;) I mix approx 2.5 to 3 oz of Turkey Red Oil with FO and Mica ..is this Case…I used Black…and it Colored NICELY. I haven’t tried other Mica colors yet…..(other scents I have made were yellow/red layered…so I didn’t need another color).
