Category: Aromatherapy Aromatherapy, sometimes also referred to as aromatic or scent medicine, is the art of healing the body using naturally distilled essences from different parts of plant to improve and enhance your everyday emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. These essences are known as Essential Oils.
What are Essential Oils?
These oils are the concentrated essences of the aromatic plant. They can be used as an analgesic (to alleviate pain), an anti-inflammatory (to reduce swelling), an anti-bacterial, an anti-fungal, an anti-viral (to prevent infections). Since scent stimlates the part of the brain that effects your emotions, Essential Oils can also sooth and calm.or energize and arouse.
These Essential Oils are highly concentrated and are measured in drops. They should be housed in dark colored air tight bottles in a cool area, out of direct light. Unless noted, they should not be applied directly to the skin, but instead placed in a Carrier Oil such as Almond oil, so as to avoid irritation.

Like it or not, homes can be full of bad smells, germs, and dirt. The first products people usually turn to are strong chemical solutions.
These aren’t particularly healthy, and can have unpleasant odors of their own. Perhaps a better type of product to reach for is essential oils.
Essential oils can be used for many different household problems. Tea tree and lavender oils are considered to be highly effective anti-bacterial essential oils. A few drops of either can be added to water to rinse any area you want to disinfect.
These can include sinks, countertops, and bathrooms. You can make an antiseptic spray by putting the water with essential oils in it into a spray bottle. Spray it around bathrooms, kitchens, and sickrooms.
Sometimes, you don’t mind so much using the chemical cleaners. You just want a fresher, more natural smell to linger when you finish. If this is the case, you can make a rinse to use following regular cleaning. To make the rinse, add four drops of any essential oils you like to a pint of water. Then, simply rinse the area with this after you have cleaned. You can use essential oils like pine, lavender, wintergreen, rosemary, orange, or any others you like. Read more...

Category: Aromatherapy Creighton University Medical Center School of Medicine is out to determine if alternative therapies actually work. Aromatherapy has long been recognized for the treatment of minor ailments as well as the promotion of emotional stability. But how does it actually work? The Medical Center reports that while there is widespread use, there is still not much scientific evidence to support claims of the ability to treat these ailments.
What studies have been done? The school has tested the lavender, chamomile, marigold and peppermint essential oils in several studies to see if there was a reduction in the perception of pain. Placebo tests were also performed in these studies as well. The results showed that there positive effects through the use of the essential oils although they were not conclusive. Does that mean that essential oils do not work? Absolutely not! What the studies do show is that there are positive physiological effects when aromatherapy was used as a complementary form of treatment. Read more...

The pure essences distilled from aromatic plants have been prized for their health-giving qualities for thousands of years. Using the beneficial properties of oils, you can treat common ailments, promote good health and emotional well-being, and enhance every aspect of your life. These potent, volatile essences are natures gift to mind, body, and spirit.
Essential Oils can evoke smell imagery; sometimes the smell of a certain aroma can instantly bring back memories of a childhood scene. Some scents can make us feel relaxed while others can make us feel energized and alivethis is the power of aroma.
For centuries it has been common knowledge that scents produce mental and physical responses. Using plant, flower, and spice essences for Beauty treatments (and to help with physical ailments) is common and has been practiced since ancient times.
Today, aromatherapy is moving out of the health alternatives and into the mainstream, such as in the workplace (to improve productivity, especially in the afternoon, when companies release Lemon or Peppermint through vent ducts – a great pick-me-up!). Airlines and hotels are also looking at aromatherapy as a jet-lag cure. Read more...

Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
Most frequently recommended for the treatment of athletes foot, Candida, in fact any sort of fungus. Tea Tree oil is an effective all round anti-bacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal oil. Many authorities recommend using Tea Tree neat (undiluted) but much recent evidence shows that it is actually more effective in a 2% dilution. I personally consider it much too harsh to use undiluted on the skin.
Tea Tree is the usually suggested aromatherapy remedy for Ringworm. If I were trying to treat this fungal infection Id go with a weak (ie 12 drops/ounce of carrier) dilution of Tea Tree in Jojoba Oil.

Category: Detox, Immunity, Infection There are those that believe that toxins can build up in the body and cause all sorts of illnesses and disease. It is also believed that these toxins will travel throughout the body and end up accumulating in the feet and toes.
The buildup of these toxins is thought to cause health conditions such as arthritis and Alzheimers disease. Alternative health practitioners believe that by removing the toxins you can remain healthy and have more energy.
Detox foot pads are the latest in alternative health treatments. These pads are applied to the soles of your feet at bedtime and the natural ingredients found in these pads will draw out the toxins in your body through the soles of your feet. Many people claim relief from joint pain and a more relaxing sleep while using these foot pads.
All detoxifying foot pads should contain all natural ingredients that are not harmful to your body. The ingredients found in the foot pads will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Read more...

Category: Beauty & Personal Care Manicures and pedicures have become a common luxury among Americans. Not just for women either; it isn’t surprising to see a male having his feet pampered at the local nail salon. It’s a treat available even to those on a budget, as it’s easy to create your own makeshift spa in the comfort of your own home and create amazing manicures and pedicures. However, if you plan to head out to your favorite salon or spa for your next manicure and pedicure, there are a few things you should be aware of before dipping your feet into the pedicure whirlpool.
First and foremost, it’s a fact that not all nail salons and spas are created equal. They may look the same on the inside or outside, have employees with the same salary, and charge the same prices, but there are major differences. Think of the restaurants in your town – at least one of them probably has (or has had) a failing health inspection score that you’re blissfully unaware of as you scarf down that plate of spaghetti you’ve eaten many times before. Well, the same holds true with nails salons and spas. You won’t catch salmonella or see a health inspection score posted when you walk in, but there are standards that these places must hold up in order to safely serve their clients. Read more...
