Lecithin is a compound which is the yellow-brown in color and fatty inconsistency. It occurs in animal and plant tissue and thank you but is sometimes used as is Eminem for a phospholipid that is the major component, phosphatide. It can be isolated from egg yolk or from soybeans from which it is extracted chemically were mechanically. It does not dissolve in water easily and is sold as a food supplement and for medical purposes.
Lecithin is found in living cells is a major component of the cell membrane regulates what enters and exits that cell. Scientists define lecithin as synonymous with phosphatidylcholine, a principle phospholipid found in the compound.
Normally we are able to consume Lecithin in the diet through soy, grains, fish, yeast, peanuts and egg yolk. It is also sold as a supplement in powder, capsule or granular form. But, this dietary supplement usually contains less than 35% of the primary phospholipid, phosphatidlycholine. Most of the manufactured supplement is derived from soybeans.
Interestingly, of the thousands of molecules that make up the body and cells the phosphatidylcholine stands apart as the major component of the cell membrane bound the structure of many pieces within it. It therefore stands to reason that lecithin is an essential part of the overall health and well-being of the cellular structure of the organism, and therefore also has much to do with the aging process.
In a research study published in Otolarynlogical Head and Neck Surgery researchers found that by adding lecithin to the diets of rats they were able to delay the loss of hearing that is common in this animal as it ages. It is also possible to delay aging and other parts of the body by adding lecithin to the diet. Other studies also supported these findings.
It is also known that lecithin has much to do with cardiovascular health. In 2002 scientists at Wake Forest University found that a lack of lecithin could increase atherosclerosis. There’ve also been a number of other studies showing that lecithin will lower LDL and raise HDL having a positive effect on cardiovascular health.
In 2004 researchers in Germany found in a placebo-controlled study that there was a six niche sickeningly relevant improvement in cognitive skills of the elderly with the addition of lecithin. The results of this study and others have encouraged some researchers to investigate lecithin further in the treatment of individuals who suffer from Alzheimer’s disease. There are some studies that show lecithin has been effective in improving the cognitive function of older adults and an increasing number of neurologists believe that if a supplement is good for the heart it is also probably good for the brain.
In a study published in Journal Neural Transmission Supplement researchers found in working with patients who had Parkinson’s disease there was an improvement in their confusion, hallucinations and nightmares with the addition of lecithin. These preliminary investigations indicated that the progressive dementia of Parkinson’s disease may not be a reversible. There have been no further follow-up studies other than this one in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.
Individuals who are over the age of 16 often suffer from a progressive decline in hearing which is common and by the time many people reach age 80 hearing is so unfair that they need the assistance of a hearing aid. In a study published in 2002 researchers concluded that lecithin may preserve cochlear mitochondrial function and protects hearing loss associated with aging.
Because lecithin has such an integral part in the development and structure of all cells in the body it only makes sense that it’s those of us who don’t have enough of it will suffer some of the effects including diseases, conditions and illnesses which may be affected by increasing supplementation with this product.
