Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) can affect anyone at any time. It usually occurs in adulthood but children are not immune. If your child has been diagnosed with this disease, there are ways that you can help.
The cause of CFS is unknown. Researchers have speculated that it could be the result of a viral or bacterial infection or other illness but there is as yet no proof. For now, doctors are dealing with the symptoms.
Children have also been affected by chronic fatigue syndrome. Because of the developmental stages of children and their unpredictability, it takes a watchful parent to notice that something is wrong. The symptoms of the disease include:
* Pain in the joints
* Tiredness that persists for more than 24 hours
* Headaches
* Problems concentrating
* Sore throat
* Lymph node tenderness in armpits and neck
* Chills
* Diarrhea
* Appetite and weight changes
* Mild fever Read more...

The BCG vaccine, or bacille Calmette-Guerin, is a vaccine used for tuberculosis disease. Many individuals who are born and live in countries where tuberculosis is rampant will have been vaccinated with the BCG in an effort to prevent childhood tuberculosis meningitis. However, BCG vaccine is not generally recommended for use in the United States because of the low risk of infection with the mycobacterium tuberculosis and the variable effectiveness of a vaccine against adult pulmonary TB.
Recent research has found that the BCG vaccine has been found to be only minimally effective against tuberculosis in children and not at all effective in preventing tuberculosis in adults. This is because the use of the BCG vaccine incorporates the mycobacterium bovis, the second bacteria which causes tuberculosis. The first bacteria, mycobacterium tuberculosis, is much more very loads and has been found its to use a different mechanism for infection than the mycobacterium bovis. Read more...

I am yet to meet a mom or dad that is not eager to track the progress of their childs growth from the day they are brought home from the hospital. If only I had a dime for every time that I have heard ‘My baby is in the 99th percentile for height and weight’. It seems to be a contest to track the growth of ones own kid vs. kids of the same age. Parents just want to be sure that their child is growing normally.
It is important to remember that normal is simply a relative term. Not two kids will grow and develop at exactly the same rate. Each one has a different set of genes and on top of that they are all predestined to be a different shape and size. Some kids grow at a steady pace from birth until the day they stop growing while others go through growth spurts at different times of their development. Read more...

Children have to deal with anxiety in much the same way that adults do. Many times anxiety in children is considered normal (such as the first day of school). Some children have a tougher time with anxiety because they are extremely shy and have a harder time adjusting to new situations. It is common for children to be unable to manage their feelings or to share them the way adults have learned to be able to do. This makes their anxiety even harder to deal with.
Most fears, that a child has, do not last very long because they quickly discover that the things they fear really do not pose any danger. For example, they will learn that there are really no monsters under the bed that are out to hurt them or that the mean teacher at school will not really spank them. This type of development is considered normal and routine. Read more...

The Gluten free diet consists of removing any foods from your Autistic child’s diet that contain Gluten. This can seem hard at first because so many foods do have Gluten in them. Gluten is found in most prepared foods. Foods containing wheat, barley ,oats, or rye need to be eliminated from the diet. Gluten can also be found in some vinegars and sauces. Artificial flavorings often contain Gluten.
When using the Gluten free diet you have to be careful and read all labels on foods. Gluten can be in foods you would not think of, like spices. The theory behind removing Gluten from an Autistic child’s diet is that when the child eats a food with Gluten it causes their body to react differently than a child without Autism. Read more...
