Thirteen-year-old Justin Gellman, along with his buddies, Jake Bensky, Michael Wienlansky, Brian Coulter and Jake Brown have made it their mission to support and raise awareness for a local organization called Lift For Life.

According to Justin, it only took one visit to the Lift For Life facility to know that this was the charity that he and his friends should support for their Bar Mitzvah. “Once I visited the amazing facility I immediately knew that this was going to be the charity I was going to help for my bar mitzvah,” Justin said.

Justin says that participating in an endeavor to benefit his community for Bar/Bat Mitzvah means that he’s helping to give back to his community “not just by donating money, but by giving my time to make others feel good.”

But why did Justin and his friends choose Lift For Life?

Jake Bensky practices his kitchen skills while volunteering at the Lift For Life facility“Lift for Life is a charity that helps kids from disadvantaged homes.  This charity takes kids away from violence and abuse that occurs in their homes,” Justin explains

“They pick them up at bus stops and take them to their gym where they can do their home work, play games, play basketball, and lift weights.  In fact the weight lifting program is the best thing about the lift for life gym.”

Justin continued, “Some kids who started lifting at Lift for Life have gone all around the world to compete for medals.  This is why the charity is called LIFT for Life, because they lift to feel better about themselves.”

The five boys during the making of their video for Lift For LifeJustin and his friends are not only about verbally supporting their community and raising donations, they have all been busy DOING since they began this project.

“I made a video with four of my friends inside the Lift for Life gym about the gym,” Justin explains.

“We then made a website, and put the video on the website.  This website link was then sent out to all of our relatives and close friends.”

About Lift For Life:

Lift For LifeSince it opened in 1988, the Gym has meant much more to its young members than a place to work out. For kids living in city neighborhoods, the Gym becomes a haven and a second home.

At the Gym, kids can get a nutritious meal, do their homework, see friends and get healthy exercise. They celebrate their birthdays and receive gifts at monthly birthday parties. They can earn Gym “dollars” for good behavior and for helping out, which they can redeem for snacks, movie tickets and special field trips.

While the Gym offers a variety of activities, including computer classes, weightlifting is a central focus of the program. The sport helps children learn the importance of working hard and setting personal goals.

More and more girls are participating – and winning medals in tournaments around the country! But, no matter whether kids decide to compete or even lift weights; the Gym

staff is dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment in which the children can get healthy exercise and have fun – all year round and free of charge.

Lift For LifeIn the past year, we’ve focused on the nutritional and health needs of the children who come to the Gym.

Many of the children who attend the Gym know virtually nothing about nutrition; many exist on snacks, fast food, or pre-packaged foods that lack adequate nutrition.

Some children would be considered obese. The Gym is working to address these issues by providing balanced, nutritious dinners three nights a week.

We have also instituted a pilot program, “Weight for Me,” to teach children considered to be at risk for obesity the importance of healthy eating, regular physical activity and positive behavior.
